Do Your Research
It’s impossible to know how to prioritize your time if you don’t know what there is to see. Research the ports and make a list of what appeals to you about each place. For example, I knew that I wanted to kayak while in Alaska, but didn’t know which port would be the best. Initially I was leaning toward kayaking in Juneau, but ultimately decided there was too much else that I wanted to see. Instead, I booked the kayaking excursion for Ketchikan and spent my time in Juneau at the Mendenhall Glacier.
Plan Ahead
Visiting the ports is a key part of any Alaskan cruise, and there’s no shortage of incredible activities. Whether you want to zip line through dense forests, dog sled on ancient glaciers, or kayak near icebergs – the options are as varied as the landscape.
Book your excursions in advance to secure a spot, especially for popular activities. Excursions can and do fill up well in advance of the departure date! The kayak excursion that I went on was completely booked nearly three months prior to the cruise.
Even if you’re not interested in an excursion, still take the time to research the ports ahead of time. This way, you’ll have an idea of exactly what you want to do at each destination. The time you’ll be stopped at each port varies and is occasionally fairly short. If you don’t plan ahead, certain activities might not logistically be possible.

Book A Balcony If Possible
From the moment you step foot on the ship, you have a front row seat of some of the most stunning scenery in the world. If it’s within budget, absolutely opt for a balcony room. There’s nothing like sipping your morning coffee while floating past glaciers, mountain peaks, and wildlife. Many Alaskan cruises spend a morning cruising through Endicott Arm or Glacier Bay National Park. This portion of the itinerary often starts very early (think 6am). It’s so nice not having to leave the room to take in the view!
Make sure to pack binoculars for wildlife spotting – you might catch a glimpse of seals lounging on ice floats or eagles searching for fresh fish.
Don’t Overthink It
Check the daily schedule and keep an eye on any shipboard activities that you want to do. Otherwise, save your planning for the ports. You’re on vacation to relax and enjoy yourself – don’t stress too much!
